By Aaron Humes: A police officer who refused to intervene in a fight caught on camera between two women with mental health conditions at the bus terminal in Belize City is now under investigation by her department.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, made clear his “extreme disappointment” in what was, in this case, a lack of action and worse, appearing to herself be laughing at what happened: “I don’t know if she was making fun of what was taking place. But whatever it may be, her action certainly is tantamount to a breach of discipline, a clear act of neglect of duty and that matter has been referred to P.S.B. and they are dealing with the matter.”
As for support of officers to deal with mental health issues, the Commissioner reminds that as police, “We do have a responsibility, we took an oath of office to serve and to protect the public and in our oath, it says that we must do so without fear or favour, affection or ill-will and it is expected that we will uphold that oath. If it is that the officer in question felt that she was not in a position to adequately address the issue without being harmed, then at the very least she could have called for support to come so that the matter could have been addressed. So I am not going to convict her, but she needs to explain what happened. Why certain things were not done and that’s what the investigation is going to reveal.”
