Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne tests positive for COVID-19

By Benjamin Flowers: Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Following his diagnosis, Browne took to his radio programme to say that he is “feeling fine” and “has little nasal congestion.”

He added that he was on medication and that he is fully vaccinated. He took the opportunity to encourage those who have not been vaccinated to go out and do so, reminding that there have been 7,511 confirmed COVID-19 infections in Antigua, and 135 deaths linked to the virus.

He also stressed that he knew that he was at risk of exposure to the virus given the nature of his office as a political leader.

“So, the job is such [that] I’m always exposed, which is why I took the opportunity to get vaccinated quickly. Other than this, I’m in good health. My oxygen levels [are] fine. I’m feeling well; I don’t have any loss of appetite, no loss of taste. No fever. No headaches. So, I’m doing good,” said Browne.

Browne joins fellow CARICOM heads St Lucia’s Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, and Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceno, who have all contracted COVID-19 since the pandemic arrived in the region back in March 2020.
