By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize cattle exports to Mexico continued on Tuesday.
“Today, 12th of April 2022 a total of 486 heads of cattle or 297,033 lbs of beef cattle on the hoof will be exported to Mexico,” said Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Office and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
“This export is expected to generate approximately BZ$625,000.00 in economic contribution.”
At that rate, Mexico importer SuKarne is paying $2.10 per pound to the livestock producer in the Orange Walk District.
Esquivel explained that while the cattle are inspected and loaded at KaKabish, Shipyard, where Johann Wall has a corral approved by Senasica, the Mexican agricultural health authority, the cattle come from the entire Orange Walk District
“With today’s export, the fourth export for 2022, a total of 1253 head of cattle have been exported to Mexico this year,” Esquivel said. “These exports have generated approximately BZ$1.5 million.”
The Ministry of Agriculture has been working closely with the Belize Livestock Producers Association and the livestock producers to improve the industry and exports to Guatemala and Mexico have increased considerably over the last few months.
Just last week the BLPA with the support of MAFSE, SuKarne, and animal health company Virbac, organized a one-week training in cattle management and reproduction in the Cayo, Toledo, and Orange Walk Districts.
“At least 250 cattle producers were trained in the areas of feeding, breeding, management, and sanitation,” Esquivel said.
