By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The EA Warriors, previously SQ Dragons, won the Men’s National Volleyball Championship in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Mexico Center at the Marion Jones Sports Complex on Sunday.
Twelve teams played 30 matches on Saturday and Sunday as the Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) reignited the sport with teams and their fans from Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo, Belmopan, Punta Gorda, San Pedro, Spanish Lookout, and Belize City gathering in the old capital.
Just like in the last championship in 2020, the EA Warriors, which then went by the name SQ Dragons, and Toledo Assassins reached the finals in which “the unstoppable attacking of Ernest Broaster Jr. and leadership of Elton Anderson” led the Warriors to victory repeating as champions.
The Belize Volleyball Association reported that after 18 matches of pool play, the top 8 teams made the playoffs: Toledo Assassins, The 822, EA Warriors, OW Bad News, SE Jaguars, Eagles/Scorpions, Corozal Massives, and Rednex.
In the quarterfinals, the Toledo Assassins beat Rednex 25-21, 25-17; The 822 downed the Corozal Massives 25-21, 27-29, 15-8; EA Warriors eliminated the Eagles Scorpions; and SE Jaguars put out OW Bad News.
In the ranking games on Sunday, the Eagles/Scorpions needed a deciding set to win over Corozal Massives 25-21, 23-25, 15-11 while Rednex also had to go to three to beat OW Bad News 25-22, 12-25, 15-9. Corozal Massives claimed the seventh spot over OW Bad News 25-0, 25-0 while Rednex took fifth place with a 25-19, 25-19 win over the Eagles Scorpions.
“The semi-finals lived up to its expectations with hard spikes, monster blocks, hard serves, and incredible defense plays and digs as players left it all on the court with screaming, noisy fans on the edge of their seats with every point,” said the BVA.
The Toledo Assassins made the finals by eliminating the SE Jaguars 25-22, 25-22. Then, the EA Warriors made the Gold Match over The 822 in three sets 25-22, 23-25, 15-9.
The 822 then defeated the SE Jaguars 28-26, 19-25, 15-12 to take bronze.
Next comes the BVA Women’s National Championship on April 23-24 at the Belize City Civic Center.
