By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness this afternoon issued an urgent recall notice for Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket, recalled as of April 7 in the U.S. by maker Ferrero U.S.A. Incorporated for possible contamination with the bacteria Salmonella typhimurium.
The Ministry says it has ascertained that as of April 10, Belize has no stock of the product in question, but as neighboring Mexico does, “…it is of interest that the market in Belize is investigated to determine its presence.” Thus, the Ministry and it’s public health departments across the country will be visiting major supermarkets and investigating the products, which it has the authority to seize and destroy in accordance with the Food and Drug Act of Belize, Chapter 291.
The K Mini Eggs in question is from batch number L291R03UMV, Quantity declare 327.2, produced on October 18, 2021, and with an expiration date of July 13, 2022.
Salmonella, as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons, if affected, may present symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections and arthritis.”
The Ministry of Health & Wellness advises the public to be aware of any of the two popular Easter candy products and encourages persons to report any suspicion to the Ministry or the nearest public health department.
