Parolee charged with assault spared prison time

By BBN Staff: A man out on parole violated his conditions by being criminally charged for an offense and was spared prison time after the complainant, his common-law wife, dropped the charges.

Fifty-seven-year-old Vincent Tillett was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of aggravated assault. The offense was committed with a knife.

In court, he pleaded not guilty but after his plea, the victim took the stand and told the court that she wanted no further action against Tillett.

With that, the Magistrate dismissed the case for want of prosecution.

Tillett had been out on parole for the past two and a half years after being convicted for manslaughter in the stabbing death of Darwin Phillips in 2013. He had been sentenced to 15 years and served 9 before getting parole.
