Belize Brain Awareness Society discusses mental health with the Belize Defense Force

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Brain Awareness Society (BBAS) held a mental health workshop yesterday with 40 participants from the Belize Defense Force (BDF).

The interactive workshop, held at the 2Bn Camp Belizario for the BDF at Central Farm, featured presentations by Psychologist Elicia Habet, the soldiers were also given the opportunity to vent about issues that were affecting them.

Kaylia Nunez Founder and Ambassador for the BBAS explained that the BDF reached out to the organization to come in and speak to the soldiers as a means of offering psycho-social support.

“They will continue to get these presentations every month or so and they will also continue to see the psychologist individually,” Nunez said.

She went on to say that, after the session, soldiers went on to sign up for the employee assistance program through the Ministry of the Public Service.

The issue of the mental health needs of security force members has been thrust into the spotlight recently, following the brutal murder of Estevan Baeza by BDF Private Raheem Williams. Williams, whom the BDF senior command says has no history of violent behavior, savagely beat Baeza to death on the night of April 1 with his bare hands.

The BDF has since committed to pay the funeral expenses for Baeza and to offer additional support to its soldiers.
