Rugby Belize is calling the Belize National Rugby Team ‘The Camazotz’ – the Mayan bat god.

The Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Qualifiers is the qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in September and The Commonwealth Games 2022 set for Birmingham, England in July.

The Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Qualifiers will be played at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau.

Belize were drawn in Pool D and will battle Barbados, Bermuda, and the Dominican Republic.

Pool A is made up of Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, and the British Virgin Islands.

Jamaica, Guyana, Curacao, and the Bahamas will play in Pool B

Pool C comprises Mexico, Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

This is Belize’s second international tournament after participating in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championship last October in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The top two teams qualify to the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022. Canada, already prequalified, and the highest-placed team eligible, will go to The Commonwealth Games 2022.

According to RAN, the 15 teams will compete in a round-robin style format in the two-day event in the Bahamas. Day One will feature the first round from which the top two sides from each pool qualify to the Cup quarterfinal on Day Two.

The four teams in the quarterfinals advance to the Cup semi-finals. The winners advance to the Cup final.

Meanwhile, the nations that lose in the quarterfinals will compete for the Plate – 5th place. The two losing sides of the semi-finals will play for 3rd/4th places.

RAN said that on Day Two, the seven remaining teams that did not make the Quarterfinals will compete in one of two round-robin competitions – Shield 1 for the 3rd place finishing pool sides and Shield 2 for the three 4th place pool finishing teams.
