Legalize it! Anti-referendum petition launched

Posted: Wednesday, April 13, 2022. 8:57 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: While a growing number of Belizeans are supporting the call from the Church and other interested parties to hold a referendum on the legalization of marijuana, an online petition has been launched from those who have already decided that legalization is right for Belize.

The “No Referendum; Legalize it” petition was launched yesterday with the initial target of hitting 100 signatures. It has already garnered 24.

The originator of the petition, listed by the online name Dive Shark, takes umbrage with the church’s opposition to the Government of Belize’s Cannabis Control and Licensing Bill, claiming corruption on the part of the church.

“The corrupt leaders of Belizean Churches are using their power to enforce the continued criminalization of a drug/plant that was never mentioned by Jesus or mentioned in the Bible. Instead of using their voice to fight corruption and murder and poverty, they are showing us that they are more concerned about enforcing their own personal non-biblical beliefs on others even though there is no basis for any of this in the Bible,” Dive Shark said.

He went on to say that anti-marijuana laws are rooted in racism and went on to condemn the church leaders for not being as vocal about rape, murder, and corruption. He closed by stressing that church leaders have no right to force their beliefs on others.

Those interested in supporting the petition can do so here.
