By BBN Staff: Tyrone Reid was sentenced to 31 years for the murder of Belize City businessman Ruben Perez, but due to several mitigating factors, he only has just under 18 years and seven months left to serve.
Yesterday, Justice Ricardo O’Neal Sandcroft, after considering the aggregating and mitigating features, started Reid’s sentence at 31 years. He then deducted 1/5 of the sentence ( which is 6 years) for Reid’s guilty plea which takes it to 25 years. He further deducted Reid’s time spent on remand 6 years and 5 months, leaving him with 18 years and 7 months renaming.
Reid will be eligible for parole after serving 12 of the remaining 18 years.
Reid is one of two men charged for Perez’s murder back on November 26, 2015. Surveillance footage from the area showed the duo riding up to Perez on a bicycle and one of them firing a shot that caught him in the neck.
The other man, Keon Dennison, pleaded not guilty and his trial was also heard before Justice Sandcroft, who has reserved his ruling for a later date.
