By BBN Staff: Last week, the Supreme Court found that Hubert Baptist, one of four men charged for producing a video for the purpose of gang activity, had violated the conditions of his bail and remanded him to prison. Today Baptist’s attorney tried to have his bail renewed, but was unsuccessful.
Attorney Liesja Barrow Chung, submitted to the court that Baptist should receive another opportunity to get out on bail because he is not a flight risk and is a leader in his community. Barrow Chung also had sworn testimony from the head of the Leadership Intervention Unit, William Dawson, regarding Baptist’s character.
However, following the submissions, Justice Susan Lamb determined that Baptist could not be trusted to keep the conditions of his bail, after violating two of those conditions prior; once for breaching the curfew requirement to be off the street between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., and once for being charged for assaulting an officer when the bail conditions specifically state that he should not be criminally charged while out on bail.
Baptist will now remain on remand until the matter is resolved in court.
