Homeless woman who stripped nude and beat up other woman remanded to prison for psychiatric evaluation

Posted: Thursday, April 14, 2022. 6:31 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: On Sunday, April 10, we reported that a woman at the bus terminal in Belize City had stripped nude, and violently beat up another woman. Today that attacker, identified as 28-year-old Hannah Marin, was charged with two counts of common assault.

In court, Marin explained that she is homeless and that police had charged her with a wrong name, then proceeded to spell her name for Magistrate Baja Shoman. The Magistrate explained that she is being charged for attacking the victim on two separate occasions, one on Saturday, April 9, and the other on Tuesday, April 12. Marin initially pleaded guilty but said that she attacked the victim, who is also believed to be mentally ill for a reason.

Marin went on to explain that the victim had repeatedly hit her, leading her to eventually respond with violence.

Her demeanor and frequent outbursts while responding caused the prosecution to request that she be psychiatrically evaluated. The prosecution further objected to bail, on the grounds that the accused is homeless and therefore cannot be relied upon to come to court for her next date.

Marin became furious and objected, stressing that if the police take her to the Conch Shell Bay area, she can find a relative to stay with.

Magistrate Shoman, after considering the factors, denied bail and remanded Marin to the Belize Central Prison pending the requested evaluation. She is due back in court on May 23.

Notably, a police officer was present for the altercation at the bus terminal, but when a bystander requested that she intervene the officer refused. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said this week that it appears the officer neglected her duties but he will await her explanation before action is taken against her.
