Man fined after pleading guilty to pulling a machete on his sister-in-law during family dispute

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man has been fined after pulling a machete on his sister-in-law during a family dispute and threatening to “chop her up.”

Thirty-two-year-old Conrad Guzman, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of threatening words.

The allegation against him is that while he was at a yard on Cemetery Road, he got into an altercation with his brother’s common-law wife. During that alteration, Guzman pulled the machete on the woman and threatened to chop her up into pieces.

In court, he immediately pleaded guilty to the charge, telling the court that he was sorry for his actions and did not want any further problems with his family.

For the aggravated assault he was fined $2,000 which needs to be paid by October 28 or he will spend 4 months in prison. For the threatening words, he was fined $250 which he must pay by May 31 or spend two months in prison for default.

The complainant in Guzman’s case was in court yesterday as her common-law husband Regan Gomez pleaded guilty to harm for punching her in the face while at the Michael Finnegan on Sunday.
