Massive crowds headed to the Cayes this weekend – a new found freedom or the birth of a COVID re-surge

By Benjamin Flowers: The Easter weekend is fast approaching and people have already begun travelling to the Cayes, but will the new relaxed COVID-19 regulations cause a spike in new cases?

This morning, large crowds were seen packed into the San Pedro Belize Express water taxi terminal, hundreds of people in a small space, many of them not wearing masks.

According to the updated regulations that came into effect on April 1, wearing a mask in either indoor or outdoor settings is no longer mandatory; however, some businesses and agencies, including the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) still require it. Clubs and bars were also allowed to reopen with no limit on capacity.

Sources in San Pedro tell Breaking Belize News (BBN) that golf cart rental companies have rented out all their carts, an indication of the level of visitors that La Isla Bonita is preparing to receive.

Leading up to the new relaxed measures taking effect, Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard said, “Тhе rеѕроnѕіbіlіtу nоw lіеѕ оn уоu, thе іndіvіduаl аnd wе ехресt thаt Веlіzеаnѕ соntіnuе tо rеmаіn vіgіlаnt оf соurѕе, аnd аt thе ѕаmе tіmе, bеіng rеѕроnѕіblе.”

Will open air, high temperatures and the sun keep us healthy and generally free from, or with limited infections, and allow Belizeans to enjoy our normal Easter festivities; or will this Easter be an opportunity for a resurgence in COVID-19 cases? With COVID-19 estimated to take at least five and six days before symptoms begin to show, it will take some time to determine what impact, if any, the Easter weekend will have on the number of new infections.
