By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Holy Week is well observed in Benque Viejo del Carmen in the Cayo District with religious activities the entire week.
Today, Good Friday, the day that Jesus Christ died on the Cross is a solemn day of fasting, abstinence, prayer, and mourning. In Benque, the Good Friday events include re-enactment of the Passion of Christ in the morning, a Church Service in the afternoon, and the Holy Burial procession through the town’s main streets in the evening.
The people living on both sides of the streets where the Good Friday procession is going to pass have been busy doing Colourful Sawdust Tapestries. These tapestries don’t last very long because those participating in the Holy Burial procession pass over them, but it is an activity that many Benqueños love to do.
“After two longest years ever, we will be back with the colorful and ephemeral art, Sawdust Tapestries,” said the Benque House of Culture which along with other organizations is responsible for organizing the activity.
“The organized routes are Church, Diaz, St. Joseph, and a portion of Churchill Street. Material has been distributed and we thank all participants and the faithful supporters for upkeeping the community vivacity of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Benque.”
The Good Friday procession comprises the Stations of the Cross during which the statue of Jesus Christ is carried in an enormous platform and carried by the Cofradía del Señor Sepultado de Monte Carmelo (Mount Carmel Brotherhood of The Buried Lord), and accompanied by the Benque Viejo Marching Band.
The procession starts at 5:30 pm after the Good Friday Liturgy at Mount Carmel Church. The Liturgy includes the Divine Mercy Novena, the Veneration of the Cross, and the reading of the Passion of Christ. Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.
