By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A six-man group leads the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic.

After 2½ hours on the road from Belize City to San Ignacio, the six riders led by approximately 6½ minutes over the field.

After 1 hour and eight minutes, a chase group, comprising Westrac Alliance’s Byron Pope, Anguillan Hasani Hennis, American John DeLong, and FAL’s Marlon Castillo caught up with G-Flow’s Shaun Codd and Westrac Alliance’s Eric Trapp who had sped away at Mile 10.

The six look comfortable at the front, increasing the gaps as the race progresses.

The peloton was led by Guatemalan team Ópticas Deluxe which featured 2019 champion Julio Padilla but was breaking up as the race rolled into the hills as they approached Mount Hope.

The G-Flow team was dominant in the first stage of the race as the 80-strong field left Belize City at 6:00 am.

Barbadian Joshua Kelly and Anguillan Hasani Hennis made early moves but couldn’t establish themselves.

Trapp and Codd, the U23 National Champion, seemed comfortable up front opening a 1½ minute lead on the peloton by Mile 20.

By Rockville, John DeLong, Westrac Alliance’s Byron Pope, FAL’s Marlon Castillo and Hennis made a move and managed to close the gap on the front two.
