By Benjamin Flowers: Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markel, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were at the opening of the 2022 Invictus Games, at Zuiderpark in The Hague, Netherlands, where the Prince publicly expressed their support for Ukraine as it continues to be besieged by Russia.
The games, which is an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans, kicked off on Saturday, April 16 and will run until Friday, April 22.
During her introduction, the Duchess acknowledged all military personnel, thanking them for their service, before specifically acknowledging the Ukrainian team. She commended their presence, even as their country is at war, and said “We all support the Ukrainian team,” before introducing the Duke, who has also served 10 years in the British military.
During his speech the Duke also took some time to speak directly to the Ukrainian team saying, “The courage it took to come is indescribable. You want to tell your truth, the truth,” he said to them. “The world is united behind you. I hope we learn how the world can better support you.”
The games were originally scheduled for 2020 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
