Family of five loses their home to fire due to illegal power connection

Posted: Tuesday, April 19, 2022. 6:06 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) says that a family of five lost their home and everything in it over the Easter weekend, due to a fire stemming from an illegal power connection.

The house where Stanley Bernardez, 41, his wife and three children, lived on Laura Dunn Street, Antelope Street Extension area, Belize, City, began burning on Holy Saturday, shortly before 3:00 p.m.

Station Sergeant for the BNFS Kenneth Mortis said that the family has not been cooperating with investigators since the incident.

“They are knowledgeable of the fact that they are in the act of an illegal ‘currant’, they gave our firefighters a hard time in even trying to gather information. They weren’t fully cooperating with us,” Mortis said.

He added that the Antelope Street Extension area has seen several fires recently, and says that the BNFS continues its education campaign to city residents on the potential hazards of illegal power connections.

Neither the house nor its contents were reportedly insured in this latest fire.
