FFB hosts U19 Central American Football Championship starting Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize is hosting the Central American Football Union’s (Uncaf) Under 19 Championship next week.

Eight countries are competing in the Central American Championship which will be played at the FFB Stadium and the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan from Sunday, April 24, to Saturday, April 30.

Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are in Group A while Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, and invited guests Puerto Rico are in Group B.

The tournament will be played in a round-robin format. The group winners play for the championship on Saturday, April 30. That same day the two second-place teams play for third place, the two third-place teams face each other for fifth place and the two last-place teams take on each other for seventh place.

Games will be played on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Four matches are scheduled on each of those four days: two at the FFB Stadium and two at the Isidoro Beaton.

Belize will play the three first-round games at 7:00 pm at the FFB Stadium. On Tuesday, the Belize Men’s National Football Team (BMNT) will face Nicaragua. Then on Thursday, April 26, the BMNT will take on El Salvador before closing against Honduras on Thursday, April 28.

Depending on their position within the group, the BMNT will play either at the FFB or the Isidoro at 4:15 or 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 30.

All the national teams are expected to arrive here on Friday, April 22, and should leave on Monday, May 1.
