By Aaron Humes: Juan Cocom of Orange Walk faces a notice of intended prosecution for the deadly crash on the George Price Highway on Holy Saturday that claimed the life of a Guatemalan national who was driving a cargo truck between miles forty-one and forty-two when he collided head-on into a Freightliner traveling in the opposite direction.
Cocom reported, according to ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department, that “he was driving his Freightliner truck when apparently the driver of the white box truck, Marco Tulio Aldana overtook another vehicle that was traveling in that direction coming towards him and caused the head-on collision. The body of Aldana was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead… [Cocom] received minor injuries and was treated and released. We know that a notice of intended prosecution was issued to him and police have gotten blood and urine samples from both drivers, of course.”
The incident happened as the Cross Country Cycling Classic was returning to Belize City. Police and other emergency responders had to transport the victims away from the scene as quickly as possible so as not to interrupt the race in progress.
ASP Yearwood commended the officers for a professional job to catalogue the scene and clear it so that the race could pass unimpeded: “The Cross Country was coming and the officers worked diligently and swiftly to clear the highway as to not … impede the [flow of] traffic. So both trucks were removed and hauled to the shoulder of the road. We want to thank the driver of an excavator that assisted us in moving these vehicles off the road.”
He added that the sketch plan was drawn of the scene and other processing was completed in time to avoid public criticism of potentially stopping the race – additionally there were witnesses present who were waiting for the race that saw what happened and had been talked to by Police.
