By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Prime Minister of Belize John Briceño, in his capacity as Chair of CARICOM, will co-host the Second Global COVID-19 Summit.
According to the Government of Belize Press Office, the Prime Minister will co-chair along with the United States as the first COVID Summit Chair and the representatives from Germany, holding the G7 Presidency; Indonesia, holding the G20 Presidency; and Senegal as African Union Chair.
The summit, which will be held virtually on May 12, 2022, will have three main themes: Vaccinate the World, Save Lives Now, and Build Better Health Security.
The Press Office said Prime Minister Briceño looks forward to a successful summit that will contribute to the international effort in the fight against COVID-19 and to advance global pandemic preparedness.
“The objectives of the summit are to redouble collective efforts to end the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to prepare for future variants, pandemics, and other health threats,” said the Press Office.
“The summit will seek to galvanize commitments and actions from governments, NGOs, philanthropists, and the private sector to achieve these objectives.”
To mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 and protect persons at the highest risk, the summit’s goal is to make the administration of vaccinations, testing, and treatments accessible. The summit also aims at strengthening public health systems to prepare for future health threats.
