By BBN Staff: A bus terminal employee was freed of a charge of theft after his co-worker, who managed to recover her phone, dropped the charges.

Thirty-three-year-old Javier Corado appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged with stealing a cellphone valued at $799, the property of his co-worker, on April 12.

The complainant told police that she was selling tickets at the terminal when she realized that her phone was missing, and later learned that Corado had taken it.

In court, he initially pleaded not guilty and said that the complainant was preparing to drop the charges, but when her name was called she did not show up. Corado then told the court that he took the phone to secure it and that he removed the SIM card because the phone had gone dead.

Corado was granted bail in the sum of $1,000, as there was no objection from the prosecution; but about an hour later, the complainant showed up and did as he had claimed she would do.

Up to his leaving court, Corado had not returned the SIM card to the complainant.
