By Aaron Humes: The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) hosted its second-straight and 52nd overall annual convention virtually starting on Wednesday and concluding today, Thursday.
The teachers listened to presentations over the past two days from Dr Garth Anderson, president of the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) on the importance of trade unionism; Deputy Chief Education Officer Cecilia Ramirez-Smith on using the new Teacher Learning Institute (TLI) platform installed by the Ministry; trustees of the Public Sector Workers’ Trust (PSWT), Dr Philip Castillo and Nadia Caliz, on projects to be realized from the PSWT for those teachers and public officers affected by the 1995 to 1997 increment freeze instituted by Government, and educator and journalist Ifasina Efunyemi on the concept of ‘Love Language’ and identifying its use in daily relationships.
The usual regular business of the Convention – discussion and adoption of reports from committees and union branches – was also conducted, and the Union announced the first of a planned annual contribution of $500 to a deserving charity, organization or institution. Selected this year was the Oncology Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
The next convention is set for April 12 and 13 in Orange Walk Town.
