By BBN Staff: Two teenagers, one 18 years old and the other a 17-year-old minor, have been charged with beating up a 34-year-old police officer.
Tyree Staine and the co-accused minor appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where they were charged with a single count each of wounding.
The minor initially pleaded guilty to the charge but did so with an explanation. He said that he was in an apartment building having a sleepover at a friend’s house when he was approached by a man later learned to be PC#133 Luis Santoya. The minor said that Santoya appeared drunk, so he did not acknowledge him and that’s when Santoya became violent with him. He went on to say that he and Staine had to overpower Santoya.
With that explanation, the Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty and granted the duo bail in the sum of $1,000 each plus one surety each of the same amount.
They are due back in court on June 21.
Santoya, on his behalf, reported that a group of men in his apartment building were smoking marijuana and he told them to stop. He said that later he was returning from the building’s shared bathroom and was attacked by the two accused.
