By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Even as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise was busy with its annual general meeting, cattle were being exported to Mexico on Friday.
“A total of 189 cattle from Kakabish, Orange Walk District, was exported to Mexico, today the 22nd of April 2022,” said Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Office and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
“The economic contribution generated is approximately BZ$190,000.”
As has been the case over the last few months, the cattle are sold to the Mexican company SuKarne which is paying $2.10 per pound to the livestock producers in the Orange Walk District.
As per the norm, the cattle must be vaccinated against diseases such as brucellosis and tuberculosis and quarantined at least 21 days before exportation. Additionally, the Mexican agricultural health authority, Senasica, sends their veterinarians to inspect the cattle before they are sent over the border.
With today’s export, the fifth export for 2022, a total of 1,442 head of cattle have been exported to Mexico this year. That accounts for approximately BZ$1.725 million.
