Leader of the Opposition meets U.S. State Department Director of Central America Affairs

Posted: Friday, April 22, 2022. 10:16 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, met with the U.S. State Department Director of Central America Affairs, Patrick Ventrell to discuss matters such as strengthening democracy throughout the region, citizen security, human trafficking economic development, and tourism.

In recognition of the over 40 years of friendship between Belize and the United States of America, Barrow presented Director Ventrell with a wood-carved fish from an artist in Camalote Village in Cayo South on behalf of the UDP Opposition and the people of Belize.

“In a world where despotic dictators and autocrats invade sovereign nations such as Ukraine and slaughter tens of thousands of Ukrainians; in a region where some of our neighbors jail Opposition Leaders, political opponents, and dissidents, it is now more important than ever to push for democracy and freedom everywhere,” said a social media post by Barrow.

“We cannot sit on the fence as the global threat to democracy grows stronger; we must stand ready to condemn dictatorial regimes who abuse human rights, international law, and the inherent freedoms that should be enjoyed by all.”

Barrow said Belize is proud to be a strategic partner with the United States in the fight to protect and promote the ideals of freedom and democracy that we hold dear.
