Mother charged for blinding son in one eye after hitting him in face with knife

Posted: Friday, April 22, 2022. 8:29 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A 30-year-old Mahogany Heights Resident was arraigned in court on Thursday and charged with causing an injury to her seven-year-old son that was so severe he lost the vision in one of his eyes.

Natalie Nicole Palacio appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to answer a single charge of maiming.

The allegation against her is that on February 14, 2022, she repeatedly hit the child in the face with a knife causing the injury. On March 2, the child, in the presence of his father, gave his account of the incident to the police.

In court, Palacio, a mother of four children, told the magistrate “I only stin him because he made the baby drop and burst his head.”

The Magistrate expressed concern for the child’s safety, but the prosecution assured that since the incident the Department of Human Services removed the child from Palacio’s care and that he is now living with his father in another village.

The Magistrate told Palacio that she cannot enter a plea because maiming is an indictable offense, thus the matter will be trialed in the Supreme Court. She could, however, receive bail at the Magistrate level, and was granted bail in the sum of $8,000 plus two sureties of the same. Under the conditions of her bail, she is also to keep a minimum of 100 yards from her son.

She is due back in court on June 24.
