By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Вrісеñо is back in Belize and on Friday hosted Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize, David Kuan-Chou Chien, joined by representatives of the Overseas Engineering & Construction Company (OECC-Belize).
According to the Prime Minister, writing on social media, he and OECC’s president James Hsiao and chairman Jeff Chung “reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction project for the Corozal-Sarteneja Road. Discussions also commenced for the construction of the Hospital Project for San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.” The Prime Minister was joined by his CEO Narda Garcia.
The former is a project begun under the previous administration while the latter was confirmed during the Prime Minister’s Budget presentation in March.
The Corozal-Sarteneja Road project will provide 27 miles of paved road to residents of the area, including Chunox, Copper Bank and Progresso. Travel time will be reduced significantly, speeding up transportation of goods and services and opening a door for tourism expansion. A loan of US$50 million from Taiwan facilitates the construction which is overseen by its officials.
As for the new hospital, as we reported in March, a $33 mіllіоn grаnt frоm Таіwаn wіll соvеr dеѕіgn аnd соnѕtruсtіоn, ѕсhеdulеd tо ѕtаrt іn thе fоrthсоmіng fіѕсаl уеаr.
