Belize loses both games at the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens qualifiers in the Bahamas

Posted: Sunday, April 24, 2022. 11:41 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Team Belize suffered back-to-back losses at the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens qualifiers in the Bahamas this weekend.

The team played in Pool D, with its first match against Barbados on Saturday, and lost 42-0. They would go on to lose 52-0 against Bermuda in the second game.

The tournament, which saw 13 teams competing, will serve to select the top two men’s teams and one women’s team to participate in the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022, being held in South Africa from September 9-11. Additionally, the highest-placed men’s team will participate in The Commonwealth Games 2022 to represent RAN, alongside Canada, as both its men’s and women’s teams have already pre-qualified.

Leading up to the event, Tony Gillings, founder, and president of Rugby Belize said that the odds were against Belize this time around to secure any spots in the high profile games, as Belize is fairly new to the sport of Rugby, but would have to compete against professional and semi-professional teams.

“This is only our second international event, so we’re probably not going to get one of those places. But really for us, it’s all about participation. The exposure. The more international games we play the better we get,” Gillings said.

The management and staff of Breaking Belize News commend ‘Team Belize” for courageously taking the steps needed to better themselves and wishes them a safe return flight home.
