Pharmacists Association commends Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard for comments on medication supply management

By Benjamin Flowers: The Pharmacist Association of Belize has commended Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard, for comments made regarding medications during a recent appearance on Love FM’s morning talk show.

The association issued a press release, in response to Bernard noting that on occasion some doctors refer patients to private hospitals to purchase medication when the medications were available at public hospitals.

“The Pharmacists Association of Belize commends the Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Kevin Bernard’s attention to the procurement, storage, and usage of pharmaceuticals in the government sector. This has long been an area of concern for both staff and patients as the undersupply, mismanagement, and wastage of medications leaves countless families scurrying to obtain their much-needed prescriptions through various avenues and not just at Northern Regional Hospital but countrywide,” the Association said.

The association went on to say that, to better the operations countrywide in terms of delivering medications, Central Medical Stores needs to be overhauled and effective systems that meet quality safety standards put in place.

The Pharmacy Association also pledged to work alongside the Ministry in its quest to improve the delivery of service to Belizeans, and in that light said that it was cautious of statements that include generalizations and finger-pointing.
