Prime Minister reassures ICJ case will not be hampered due to Alexis Rosado’s arrest

Posted: Sunday, April 24, 2022. 6:19 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize was rocked by news on Wednesday that former Ambassador to the European Union and Guatemala, Alexis Rosado, faced criminal charges: one count of rape, one count of sexual assault and six counts of aggravated assault.

He has pleaded not guilty and was offered bail of $5,000 plus two sureties of the same amount.

Rosado was one of Belize’s co-agents for the case on Belize’s territorial integrity before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and was described as a “walking encyclopedia” on the issue.

But speaking to reporters on Saturday, Prime Minister John Briceño said the arrest “will not affect” the handing over of Belize’s memorial response due in June. He added that his heart goes out to Rosado on this state of affairs.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that “Alexis Rosado played a very, very important role, a senior role, in the work that we have been doing in preparing our case to the ICJ,” further explaining that along with co-agent Ambassador Assad Shoman, he was in charge of collating the work of the attorneys researching Belize’s response to Guatemala’s memorial to the court issued last year and tying that work together.

P.M. Briceño commended Shoman as “probably the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the Belize-Guatemala dispute.”

As for the charges against Rosado, the P.M. said he would not comment beyond a reminder that Belize’s rule of law presumes all suspects innocent until proven guilty by the State in a court of law.

Now stripped of his Ambassadorial posts, Rosado will return to court on July 6.
