By Aaron Humes: A rash of incidents of violence against women in Belize reported in recent days – accusations against former Ambassador Alexis Rosado by a woman claiming 14 years of abuse and coercion, the murder of Tracy Thompson in Corozal and the assault of Vanessa Reyes in Placencia – has prompted the Opposition’s National Organization of Women (NOW) to speak up.
In a statement, NOW says home “should be a safe haven” and “Domestic violence must not be tolerated in our country.”
It calls on the police to investigate, the judiciary to deliver justice swiftly and the Ministry of Human Development to initiate its promised campaign against domestic violence and violence against women as well as gender bias.
NOW concludes by stating it stands “willing to partner with all relevant stakeholders to create this change we urgently need.”
