Gang rivalry believed to be the motive for Sunday night shooting in Belize City

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department is investigating a shooting in Belize City last night that led to three people being injured.

Following the shooting, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Handy Side Street, 60-year-old Steven Hope, 34-year-old Carmen Canelo, and 31-year-old Michael Usher were taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Today, Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police Assistant superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said that initial investigations show the possibility of gang involvement.

“We know that there is an ongoing rivalry between people of that neighbourhood where the shooting occurred and another nearby group,” Yearwood said.

Yearwood also said that the mediation unit of the department will be meeting with people from both the rival factions to try and understand the reason for the flare-up in violence and mitigate any future incidents.

Notably, Usher, who was only grazed to the elbow in the incident, refused medical treatment and police say he has since been uncooperative with their investigation.
