Second group of students leaves for Colombia on an agricultural scholarship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The second group of students left for Colombia on Monday on a 90-day Agricultural Labor Technical Training Program scholarship sponsored by the Colombian Government through the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC Colombia).

The scholarships were awarded to 30 applicants from Belize through the project for Agricultural Labor Technician for Peasant Leaders, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Sixteen scholarship beneficiaries left on Sunday and nine left on Monday afternoon. The next five should leave on Tuesday.

Representatives from the Mesoamerica Project which includes Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica are participating in the intensive agriculture training course in Colombia.

“The course seeks to foster an entrepreneurial spirit and inspire each participant to develop their own life project and, at the same time, become an inspiring and formative model among the peasants of their own environment, guided by principles of discipline, leadership, respect, cultural exchange and love for the countryside,” said MAFSE in a social media post.

The criteria set by and conducted by the Fundapanaca Foundation which carries out the training, require participants to:

– Be over 18 years old

– Have basic schooling: mathematics and literacy

– Have agricultural vocation

– Demonstrate a sense of belonging to your community

– Have good communication skills and community leadership

– Be fluent in the Spanish language, including reading and writing

– Be from a rural area.
