By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Central Health Region (CHR) will be conducting free malaria testing at Battlefield Park on Albert Street in Belize City on World Malaria Day on Wednesday, April 27.

Apart from the free malaria testing from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the CHR said you can learn malaria prevention techniques, talk to a Vector Control Officer about your concerns, and play malaria games and quizzes to win prizes.

World Malaria Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness and eradicate malaria which is a dangerous and life-threatening disease that is spread by mosquitoes. Malaria causes high fever, severe chills, and sweating, but is treatable.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness said the local theme for World Malaria Day 2022 is “Maintaining a Malaria-free Belize starts with me”.

“This year’s theme signifies the start of a campaign to empower communities to take ownership in preventing the reintroduction of malaria in Belize,” said the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW).

The MOHW said that for the third year in a row Belize has not had any cases of malaria. The last reported case was in December 2018. In the 1990’s Belize reported over 10,000 cases.

Belize has now officially requested the World Health Organization to certify Belize as ‘malaria-free’.
