By Rubén Morales Iglesias:

Twenty beekeepers and five Ministry of Agriculture Extension Officers from the Belize, Orange Walk, and Corozal Districts are visiting local apiaries on Thursday and Friday as part of the one-week Advanced Beekeeping Management Workshop.

After theoretical sessions during the first three days at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station in Yo Creek, Orange Walk District, the beekeepers from the Belize, Orange Walk, and Corozal Districts and the Extension Officers will be getting hands experience in the ‘Training of Trainers in Advanced Beekeeping Management Practices’ workshop.

The main facilitator is Dr. Ana Cubero from Costa Rica along with Extension Officers Miguel Huertas, Jessi Madrid, Abimael Puck, Federico Chi, Andrew Mejia, and Moises Perez.

“The capacity building is aimed at enhancing entrepreneurial skills, organization, value addition and marketing,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE).

The workshop is focusing on group dynamics, record keeping, good manufacturing practices, facilitation in diversification, marketing, and value-addition of honey and honey products.

The Advanced Beekeeping Management Workshop is facilitated by the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) Honey Production Redevelopment Support Project (Honey Project) which is part of a wider agreement, the Belize 2nd Cycle Country Assistance Program, between the Government of Belize and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF).

MAFSE said the Honey Project aims to expand the honey production subsector in Belize. It is particularly aimed at delivering new and additional capabilities to women and disadvantaged youth.
