By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is carrying out Simulation Storm Guards I on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28, 2022.

NEMO, which is an organization under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management, is being supported by the Belize National Meteorological Service and the United States Southern Command Joint Task Force-Bravo in conducting the simulation starting at 1:00 pm on Wednesday.

“The simulation is an orientation talk through walk-through exercise to bring together NEMO’s primary operational personnel,” said the Government of Belize Press Office in a press release on Tuesday evening.

The simulation will have the participation of government ministries, NEMO National Committee chairpersons and their deputies, the NEMO Department Headquarters staff, NEMO coordinators, and partners.

“The aim of the simulation is to increase the state of readiness for NEMO by improving coordination and communication between the government, private sector, partners, and civil society based on their plan of action,” said the GOB Press Office.

“The main objectives include increasing organization and preparedness at national and district level; improving coordination and communication at all levels; developing standard operating procedures checklist for emergency operation centers to respond to and recover from hazards and orient the new committee chairpersons and their staff so they can develop an understanding to improve their knowledge of their disaster risk management roles and responsibilities.”

NEMO said that during the simulation it will send advisories but to prevent any public alarm, the advisories will carry a note at the top and bottom of each page of the advisory with the following text: “THIS MESSAGE IS NOT REAL THIS IS JUST A TEST”.

NEMO said the Storm Guards I simulation is one of the key preparedness activities that it has designed so that the country is better prepared for the upcoming 2022 hurricane, flood, and emergency season.
