By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Greenhouses in San Jose Succotz in the Cayo District belonging to the Western Mopan Farmers Cooperative Society were vandalized between Monday and Tuesday.
“We are sad to report that on Monday night or early morning Tuesday, vandals went in with machetes (it seems) and damaged the material covering several of the structures,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
“While the material is repairable by stitching, the damage has affected the integrity of the covered structures and was totally an act of malice and spite.”
The covered structures are on the other side of the Mopan River across from the George Price Highway.
The Western Mopan Farmers Cooperative Society has sweet peppers planted in the greenhouses. The cooperative recently received funding for their ten greenhouses as a local cooperative registered with the Department of Cooperatives.
MAFSE said the police were called to investigate the vandalism.
“We hope any wrongdoers will be apprehended soon in relation to this matter,” said MAFSE.
“We continue wishing the Western Mopan Farmers Coop the best as they continue the effort to bring their sweet peppers to market.”
