30 farmers from the Northern Sugarcane Growers’ Association learn grafting techniques

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) held a technical training workshop on grafting techniques for 30 farmers from the Northern Sugarcane Growers’ Association at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station in the Orange Walk District.

“Grafting is an art that becomes more successful with practice. Therefore, this workshop will give hands-on instruction on grafting techniques,” said MAFSE.

According to MAFSE, the workshop started with a presentation on the benefits of grafting, rootstock choice, and scion wood selection and collection.

This was followed by a demonstration of grafting techniques used in fruit tree propagation. The participants had an opportunity to replicate the grafts.

MAFSE said this is the first group training it has done, but the plans are to have these workshops countrywide. This is part of MAFSE’s drive to reach the farmers and continue pushing agriculture as a viable source of self-sufficiency in the country.

The Agriculture Ministry said the objectives of the training session are “to impart basic knowledge and develop skills about propagating different types of plants by budding and grafting, to provide basic knowledge about tools and equipment and growing structures used in the nursery for plant production, and to instill entrepreneurial skills of plant propagation as a means of income diversification”.
