By Aaron Humes: Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance Michel Chebat has marked International Girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Day, observed every April 28.
In a video message, the Minister said that in celebrating women in this field, “it reminds us that it is our collective mandate to empower girls to develop digital skills and to make all efforts to get rid of the barriers and to enable them to pursue opportunities from digital technologies. Girls in ICT Day is a global call for action in gender equality, inclusion and women’s empowerment in STEAM [science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics], particularly the ICT field.”
In the push to have more girls and women pursue STEAM-related subjects and careers, focus this year is being leveled on the importance of enabling safe access to the digital environment. Without such access, the Minister said, women are at a disadvantage and left unable to develop the skills to pursue careers in the field. All partners must take action to ensure girls and women feel safe online.
Belize intends to do more, the Minister concluded, and is committed to being an “agent of change” along with its various partners.
