Department of Transport officially announces new bus fares countrywide

Posted: Friday, April 29, 2022. 9:16 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Those riding buses were already aware that the fares countrywide had gone up earlier this month, but this week, the Department of Transport officially released the list showing the new fares as of April 15.

The list reflects increases in the fares in the Northern, Western and Southern Zones, and are calculated by the distance a passenger is traveling. Those traveling 12 miles or less pay 25 cents more, those traveling 13-25 miles will pay 50 cents more and those traveling further than 25 miles will pay a dollar more. Those that need to change buses at the midpoint of their journey, will see their bus fare go up by two dollars.

The new fares do contain some reprieve for younger travelers, allowing half fare to be charged to all students traveling to any destination on any day, provided that student is either in uniform or possesses a valid ID from a recognized educational institution. All travelers ages 12 years and under are also to be charged half price, and no fare is charged for those ages 2 years and under.

In a recent interview with Channel 5’s Marion Ali, Thomas Shaw, President, Belizean Bus Association explained that the new fares form a part of a support package rolled out to bus owners, along with a fuel subsidy for the next six months.

Shaw also noted that bus owners were given until December to phase out older buses and bring in new ones.
