By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fourteen University of Belize (UB) students successfully completed a sheep and goat husbandry training program at the National Sheep and Goat Genetic Improvement facility in Central Farm.

A statement by the Ministry of Agriculture said the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and the University of Belize Central Farm Campus (UBCF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, through the “Breeding Sheep & Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project” on Thursday hosted the closing ceremony for the UBCF Internship Program for the 14 students.

“As part of their experience, UBCF students are exposed to theoretical and practical aspects of sheep and goat husbandry. The Taiwan ICDF resident sheep and goat experts guide students and provide hands-on experiences on relevant and updated skills such as nutrition, reproduction, and health,” said a joint ICDF-UB press release.

The University of Belize said it appreciates the Taiwan ICDF’s assistance in the technical development of its students.

“These skills will position UBCF students as leaders in the emerging sheep and goat industry in Belize,” said the release.

José Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise; Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology; David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize; Diego Tsai, Taiwan ICDF Head of Mission and Dr Vincent Palacio, President of the University, who were on hand for the closing ceremony, spoke highly of the partnership and encouraged the students.

“The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) extend their best wishes to the students for successfully completing the training and reaffirmed the commitment to further deepening the friendship and cooperation between Taiwan and Belize,” said the joint press release.

The National Sheep and Goat Genetic Improvement facility is funded through the Breeding Sheep & Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project, a cooperation program between the governments of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The facility located at Central Farm “provides high-quality genetic stock to Belizean farmers and also serves as a hub for learning and outreach to farmers, extension personnel and students”.
