By Benjamin Flowers: In a move to cut costs, Netflix has cancelled the development of Pearl, an animated series created by the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.
Pearl, which was set to chronicle the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who is inspired by influential women throughout history, was announced back in 2021 as a collaboration between Netflix and Archewell Productions, the company formed by Markle and her husband Prince Harry. Markle was set to be the Executive Producer of the series.
However, as Netflix fell on difficult economic times, Pearl and several other projects including two animated children’s series Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses were scrapped.
The BBC reports that Netflix recently saw a loss of subscribers for the first time in 10 years, back in April, with many others preparing to cancel their subscriptions. The loss has led the company’s market value to drop by a whopping $50 billion and comes after the company announced some incoming changes which include a crackdown on password sharing.
The BBC also reported that Netflix is still going through with several other projects in collaboration with Archewell Productions including a documentary series called Heart of Invictus, which focuses on the athletes competing in the Invictus Games, a competition founded by Prince Harry back in 2014.
The games are an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans
