By Aaron Humes: This past holiday weekend was the occasion for the 37th annual convention of the National Garifuna Council (NGC) in Georgetown, Stann Creek District, at the Technical High School grounds.
A new president, Sheena Zuniga, succeeds Sandra Miranda-George who is now the first vice-president. Newly elected Assistant Secretary – Ifáṣínà Efunyemi and Assistant Treasurer – Marsha Mejia join incumbents, Second Vice President – Beatrice Mariano (serving as interim president up to the Convention); Secretary – Darnelle Sterling; and Treasurer – Senator Erica Jang. They will complete their full term in office next year.
The NGC has announced that Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations in and around November 19 will be held under the theme, “Au Bun, Amürü Nu Hagabüribei Garinagu; Awanserameme Wamá Lau” – I for You, You for Me Is the Garifuna Way; Let Us Continue to Move Forward. The Ms. Garifuna Pageant and Solidarity Mass will be held in Dangriga Town on November 5, 2022.
The Council transacted its usual business including the adoption of resolutions for the subsequent year; a revision of the past year, and projections for the upcoming annual activities. This year’s convention included business sessions on the development of the council’s Strategic Plan; and discussions with funders on the realization of projects.
The Council’s next Convention will be held in Hopkins Village, Stann Creek District.
