Police ask civilian assaulted by police officer to make formal report

Posted: Tuesday, May 3, 2022. 7:05 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department is asking for the civilian that was assaulted as evidenced in a video being shared on social media, to come forward and make an official report.

Today, Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said that the department has seen the video and learned that the officer in the video is from Belize City. Yearwood said that the precinct commander has been tasked to conduct a thorough investigation.

“What we are hoping is that the person in that video would come forward and give us a formal report. But I can tell you that, on our side, our legal office has already made certain directives and that officer will be dealt with internally, regardless (of) if we have a virtual complainant or not,” Yearwood said.

He stressed that the department has repeatedly told officers that nothing is wrong with members of the public filming their interactions with police and that officers need not fear being filmed if they are performing their jobs with the highest degree of professionalism.

The video showed the officer having an exchange with someone else, but then turning his attention to the person filming and aggressing the person for doing so.

Yearwood also said that members of the public need to be mindful that they cannot obstruct an officer from doing his job for the purpose of filming.
