By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Westrac’s Isla Matheson of Ladyville won the Women’s 10.3 miles Climb of Death Run in rural Orange Walk on Labour Day. The 10.3 miles (16.58 kilometers) took off at 5:30 am at St Michael’s Primary School in San Felipe to finish at Blue Creek’s EMMC Park.
Matheson completed the race in one hour, 24 minutes, and 39.7 seconds (1:24:39.7), 8 minutes 43.2 seconds ahead of her closest rival, Orange Walk’s Carmen Castilla running for ABSolute Fitness. Castilla ran the 10.3 miles in 1:33:22.9.
It’s noteworthy to point out that Matheson finished seventh overall in the race that was run together with the men.
Westrac’s Roxana Lemus from San Ignacio took third in 1:37:11.4. Another Westrac runner, Irene Thiessen of Belmopan was fourth in 1:39:43.5.
Heart & Sole’s Lliani Ordonez from Belize City ran in fifth in 1:44:54.1.
One hundred and twenty-eight runners (70 men and 58 women) of the 140 who registered for the Climb of Death Run competed and finished the race. Twelve runners did not start the event.
The next five runners who rounded off the Women’s Top Ten are:
6 Evelyn Zuleta Westrac Ltd Belmopan 1:47:50.0
7 Jihane Habet Hill Treaders San Ignacio 1:50:26.0
8 Mairany Cante Guerreros San Felipe 1:53:41.4
9 Lilly Waight Running Sisters Orange Walk 1:58:22.6
10 Xenia Rauda Westrac Ltd Camalote 1:58:31.0
The Climb of Death Run, called that way because of the steep hill to reach Blue Creek, was held to raise funds for St Michael’s RC Primary School in San Felipe to build new bathroom facilities.
