Attacker arrested and charged for tackling comedian Dave Chappelle during show in Los Angeles

By Aaron Humes: Multiple U.S. sources have confirmed an attack on comedian Dave Chappelle Monday night near the end of his set at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, during the ‘Netflix is a Joke’ festival.

The man, since identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, apparently rushed and tackled Chappelle on stage before being intercepted by security and taken backstage. Lee sustained injuries and was taken to hospital and has since been released on US$30,000 bail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to police, Lee was found to be carrying a replica semi-automatic gun with a knife blade attached.

In video footage posted online, Chappelle continued his set, making multiple jokes about the attacker and even quipping, “It was a trans man,” leading to online outrage in the wake of his previous comments about transgender persons and lifestyles.

Several well-known names present at the venue came to Chappelle’s aid, including performers Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, and Busta Rhymes.

Coming out later on, comedian Chris Rock, who had an on-stage incident of his own with actor Will Smith during the Oscar Awards at the end of March, jokingly questioned Chappelle whether his attacker was Smith, to laughter from the audience.

Smith had previously apologized to Rock and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organizers of the Academy Awards before they suspended him for ten years, but Rock has not otherwise publicly commented on the incident.
