By BBN Staff: Seine Bight resident, Deandre Guiffarro was this morning sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for his guilty plea of manslaughter in the stabbing/chopping death of Mexican national, Gabriel Guzman Cruz.
Guiffarro pleaded guilty to manslaughter on April 5, and today Justice Moore handed down the sentence deducting one year and six months for time already spent at the Belize Central Prison on remand, leaving him with a total of 13 years and six months remaining on his sentence.
Guiffarro and his minor brother had reportedly broken into Cruz’s home in Seine Bight Village on January 7, 2020, but were caught in the act when Cruz returned home. In a caution statement given to police he explained that he had struggled with Cruz, who began choking him. Guiffarro said he hit Cruz in the head with tools and then grabbed a kitchen knife which was plastic and stabbed Cruz several times in order to get free from his grip.
He then tried to tie up Cruz before making his escape but Cruz pulled a machete and they struggled some more. Eventually, he got the machete from Cruz, and chopped him either 9 or 10 times, after which he said Cruz held on to his wrists and recited the Lord’s Prayers in Spanish before lying backward and dying.
He told police that he did not mean to kill Cruz.
