Police Commissioner Chester Williams responds to assertions that he should step down

Posted: Wednesday, May 4, 2022. 5:14 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: At a united Democratic Party (UDP) press conference earlier today, Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte questioned the effectiveness of the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, and suggested that Williams should step down from his post, given the state of major crime in Belize. Not long after, Williams took to social media and while he did not call out Peyrefitte directly, his post on the state of violent crime and the solutions can be construed as a response.

Williams said that the issue of crime is complex and requires a multi-sectoral approach to address, stressing that such an approach would take years. He also said that the issue of crime is being politicized by some, who are using it as a means of gaining political mileage with the public.

Williams noted that he has served as police commissioner under the UDP administration, during which Peyrefitte was the Minister of National Security.

“This is what makes the situation seems rather political, the fact that the messenger knows well that the crime problem existed before and that during his time as minister we did a lot to address it and it still persists then. So how now does he expect it to just go away?” Williams said.

He went on to say that he is happy to be working with the Minister of Home Affairs who is committed to making a difference by working with other stakeholders to address the root causes of crime as opposed to the effect.
