By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Red kidney bean producers met in Belmopan on Tuesday to discuss production and export possibilities.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said the bean producers met at the National Agriculture and Trade Showgrounds Conference Room in Belmopan.
“The meeting was held to discuss red kidney bean production statistics and the potential for the export market for this commodity, especially for any excess red kidney beans supply after local market demand has been fulfilled,” said MAFSE.
“Belize consumes up to 3 million pounds of RK beans annually.”
The MAFSE report said the meeting was attended by producer groups from around the country, especially the Mennonite communities in Corozal, Orange Walk, and Cayo Districts, and MAFSE personnel.
Over the last few months, MAFSE has been pushing producers’ groups of different commodities to improve and increase their production to gain entry into regional markets and beans is no exception to that drive.
